The best wedding favour is one a guest wants to take home. It might be edible, useful or personal, but it should still feel worth receiving after the place cards and flowers have been cleared away.

That is a more helpful starting point than asking how to fit two names and a wedding date onto a small object. A favour thanks the guest. Its connection with the couple gives the choice meaning; its appeal to the recipient gives it a life beyond the table.

A small gift with a long history

Confectionery has long had a place in gift giving. The V&A describes eighteenth-century bonbonnières as small precious boxes for sweets, exchanged between friends and lovers. They belonged to a wider world of decorative boxes whose uses varied, so an antique box should not automatically be described as a wedding favour.

The useful connection for a modern wedding is the pleasure of something small and carefully presented. An edible gift can carry a little of the celebration home without asking the guest to find a permanent place for it.

A chocolate may disappear the next day. The experience of receiving it can still belong to the memory of the wedding.

Choose the contents before the packaging

Start with what guests would enjoy opening. Good confectionery, a small pantry gift or another useful item can work if it suits the people and the setting.

For an edible favour, taste the actual product before placing a large order. Consider portion size, texture and how it will travel. A beautiful sample served at the right temperature does not tell you everything about a favour left on a warm table for several hours.

For a non-food favour, imagine it in the guest’s home. Does it have a clear use? Is its appeal likely to survive the occasion? A permanent monogram can make an object more specific to the couple while making it less useful to somebody else.

You can express the wedding’s identity through a card or presentation while leaving the gift itself easy to enjoy.

Personalise the gesture

The most convincing personal detail has a reason to be there. A flavour might recall where the couple met. A food may belong to a family tradition. A small gift might reflect something they enjoy sharing with friends.

Those connections can be explained in a line on a card. There is little need to turn every surface into a record of the occasion.

A guest’s name can also make the gesture feel direct. Placed beside a favour, a simple name card says that this place and this gift were prepared for them.

Plan for dietary requirements

Food favours need clear ingredient and allergen information. Collect relevant dietary needs early enough to arrange suitable alternatives, and confirm the information with the supplier for the exact products being ordered.

Do not assume that a dark chocolate is vegan, that a plain-looking piece contains no nuts or that a fruit centre settles every dietary question. Keep suitable alternatives identifiable and separately handled where the supplier’s instructions require it.

The presentation should allow guests to check what they are receiving without having to ask across a crowded table. Original labels or accurate accompanying information are more useful than a decorative flavour name alone.

If a suitable food option cannot be established for someone, a thoughtful alternative can include them in the gesture without asking them to accept an unsuitable gift.

Work backwards from the wedding day

Confirm the product format and the quantity before deciding how the favours will sit at each place. Ask about delivery timing, storage requirements, shelf life and handling, then agree who will receive and look after the order.

At the venue, identify where the gifts will be kept before they reach the tables. Chocolate needs protection from unsuitable heat, including direct sunlight during setup. Follow the maker’s instructions rather than assuming an indoor room will always provide the right conditions.

Consider the guest’s journey too. Will the favour fit comfortably into a bag? Is it protected when carried? If many guests are travelling internationally, check the relevant destination rules before choosing food they may want to take across a border.

These practical decisions preserve the pleasure you intended to give.

Give packaging one clear job

Packaging should protect the contents and make them easy to receive. A well-proportioned container, a clear message and suitable product information may be all that is needed.

Extra layers add handling at both ends: someone must assemble them, and someone must open or dispose of them. Before adding another sleeve, ribbon or tag, consider whether it contributes protection, useful information or a detail the recipient will value.

At a wedding table, the favour also shares space with plates, glasses, cutlery and flowers. Its presentation should fit the setting comfortably and leave the meal easy to enjoy.

Where a date praline can fit

A date praline brings fruit into the familiar form of a filled chocolate. Its date-led centre, dark shell and finishing note can make a small gift feel distinctive without requiring a special bridal appearance.

For couples with a personal connection to dates, hospitality or a particular food tradition, that choice may carry an additional meaning. For others, the reason may simply be that they enjoy the flavour and want to share it.

Plan around a format the maker actually offers. A box intended for several people might suit a gift for hosts, family members or the wedding party, while a place-setting favour has different requirements. Confirm what is available before designing cards, table layouts or quantities around it.

The gift does not have to do every job at once. It can be a thank-you, a small pleasure and a final detail of the day. Choose something guests will want to pick up, protect it for the journey and let the memory take care of itself.
