Why there is no pick-your-own

Opening an assortment can be a small encounter with someone else’s judgement. The maker has selected the pieces; the recipient decides how to explore them.

For Cœur, the composition is fixed because the references were developed to belong together. The six-piece box contains one of each. The larger six-reference formats repeat that selection, while the four-piece presentation brings together its defined selection of pistachio, almond, hazelnut and coconut. Each format has a composition before an individual order is placed.

This does not require everyone to like every piece equally. Preference is part of the experience. Someone may begin with coffee because it is familiar, leave sesame until later, then find that the unexpected reference is the one they remember most clearly.

A pick-your-own arrangement serves a different purpose. It allows someone to repeat an established favourite or avoid an ingredient they do not enjoy. That can be useful, but it changes an assortment into a set of individual selections. Our present approach keeps the encounter with the composed collection intact.

There is still a decision to make when giving it. The size should suit the occasion and the people sharing it. Ingredient and allergen information must also be checked before purchase; a fixed assortment is not a way to work around a recipient’s dietary needs. Where it does not suit them, another gift is the better choice.

Once the box is open, the order is entirely personal. There is no required first piece and no obligation to agree with the person sitting beside you.

We take responsibility for putting the collection together. The pleasure of choosing a starting point, discovering a preference and deciding what to taste again belongs to the person receiving it.
